Dreaming of Becoming a Pilot?5 Steps to Reach Your Dreams

How to Become a Pilot

Being a pilot is a unique and exhilarating experience. Follow these 5 steps, and you’ll be able to fly through the skies.

Education

There are many routes to becoming a pilot.

Perhaps you learned to fly aircraft in the military. This can be one way to progress to pilot training.

Another way is to get a college education. Future employers, such as airlines, usually prefer to hire pilots who have a bachelor’s degree. Useful courses include liberal arts, engineering, physics, or computer science.

It will then be time for you to choose a flight school to train with. Take a look around and find the best school for you that offers a pilot training program. You will typically be taught by a certified flight instructor.

Introductory Training Flight

It’s important that you understand what’s involved before you begin your pilot training program. One way to do this is to book a flight simulation. This will give you a sense of what it feels like behind the controls.

There are plenty of scenarios available for you to try out. Try your hand at being a commercial airline pilot, or engage in a high-octane fight in the skies.

An introductory training flight gives you the opportunity to experience what it might be like to become a pilot. You’ll be able to understand the training that is offered and take a look at flying from the cockpit of an airplane.

These introductory training flights will be offered by your flight school. You need to complete this before you can enroll in a pilot training program.

Student Pilot Certificate

The next step is to get your student pilot certificate.

First, you’ll need to apply for a medical certificate, proving that you pass all of the basic medical tests. This will usually be done by a Civil Aviation Medical Examiner and is something that your flight instructor can help to arrange.

You can then apply for a student pilot certificate. This will allow you to fly solo during your training. Again, your flight instructor can help you with this application.

Flight Training Lessons

You can now begin training with your flight instructor. You’ll start by getting to know how the aircraft works, and getting familiar with all of the controls. You will develop the knowledge and experience to safely and confidently control aircraft.

Private Pilot’s License

Once your flight instructor is happy with your performance, you can apply for your pilot’s license.

First, you must pass the private pilot knowledge test, before moving on to the practical exam. This will involve a discussion, as well as flying.

Once you’ve completed this and passed, you will receive your private pilot’s license.
